How to Properly Clean Your Hookah - Easy Guide

If you want your hookah to taste great, regular cleaning is essential. Over time, tobacco residue and molasses build up inside the hookah, which can affect the flavor of your next session.

This is especially important if your hookah is not made from stainless steel. Other materials can collect stubborn dirt much faster and may start to look unpleasant if they are not cleaned properly.

In this guide, we will show you the easiest way to clean your hookah and which tools work best.

What cleaning products can you use?

When cleaning a hookah, it is important to use products that remove odors and residue without damaging the material of your hookah.

Most hookah cleaning products fall into three categories:

Powder hookah cleaners

  • Nicotine remover powder

Spray hookah cleaners

  • hookahClean
  • Shisha Cleaner Powerful

Household cleaning products

  • Dish soap
  • Denture cleaner
  • Lemon juice

Useful cleaning tools

Besides cleaning agents, a few tools make the process much easier.

A long hookah brush is very helpful for cleaning the stem and the downstem. For the base, cleaning beads work great because they can reach areas that brushes often cannot.

Step-by-step: How to clean your hookah

1. Disassemble the hookah

Take the hookah completely apart so you can clean every single component properly.

2. Empty the base

If there is still dirty water in the base, pour it out first.

3. Rinse all parts

Hold all parts under running water to remove loose dirt and tobacco residue.

4. Clean the stem and downstem

Use a hookah brush with a small amount of dish soap or a hookah spray cleaner. Scrub the inside of the stem and downstem thoroughly to remove buildup.

5. Clean the base

Add warm water and a cleaning product from the list above to the base and let it sit for a few minutes. Then rinse it thoroughly.

If there is still stubborn residue, cleaning beads can help remove it.

6. Rinse and dry everything

Finally, rinse all parts again with clean water, dry them and reassemble your hookah.

After that, your hookah will be clean again and ready for your next session.
