Turkish craftsmanship in brass and Bohemian glass
El Nefes hookahs with Ottoman design and a direct draw
El Nefes turns Turkish tradition into usable hookahs
El Nefes is based in Budapest and has its traditional hookahs handmade through its production facilities in Türkiye. The brand follows Ottoman nargile culture while adding details that matter in everyday use. These include a working purge valve, a male bowl adapter and clearly defined single-hose setups. The result is not a modern stainless steel hookah dressed in retro styling. It is a genuine traditional pipe with enough practical engineering for current use.
Brass gives the models their physical presence
Established models such as Pasha, Gazi and Colonial Sultan use heavy cast brass bodies. Depending on the model and production series, a copper or stainless steel tube carries the smoke inside. Ornament, engraving, floral trays and hand-finished joints shape the exterior. An El Nefes therefore feels warm, substantial and visibly handmade rather than smooth and industrial. This material character separates the brand from CNC-machined hookahs built around fully interchangeable stainless steel components.
The draw deliberately remains traditional
El Nefes models usually have a narrower air path than current open-draw hookahs. Resistance is noticeable, the bubbling is present and a pull rewards a slower rhythm. Fans often describe the response as direct and concentrated. Smokers moving from very open German stainless steel models notice the difference immediately. The purpose is not to move as much air as possible with no feedback, but to preserve the classic relationship between water, hose and a narrower smoke path.
Handwork is allowed to remain visible
Small scratches, minor dents, solder traces, differences in engraving or a thread that feels tight at first can occur. This should not be judged against the flawless surface of industrial mass production. Such marks belong to the traditional manufacturing process and make each piece slightly different. Functional damage is a separate matter, of course. A buyer should nevertheless expect a handmade object with its own surface rather than a perfectly identical polished product.
Bohemian vases define many classic sets
Many larger El Nefes models are paired with heavy vases made from Bohemian glass or crystal. Depending on the version, these can be clear, opal, colored or decorated with gold, including pieces from established Bohemian glassmakers. The stem uses a traditional gasket connection into the vase. This keeps assembly simple, but replacement glass requires careful attention to neck diameter, gasket thickness and downstem depth.
Who should choose El Nefes
El Nefes is for smokers who actively want resistance, strong feedback from the water and a traditional appearance. The hookahs suit classic setups with a clay bowl, foil and long traditional hose, while modern bowls can also work with the correct gasket. The brand is not aimed at four permanently connected hoses, variable purge shows or a fully disassembled stainless steel platform. Its appeal comes from material, craftsmanship and a smoking feel that has not been polished into modern neutrality.
The models differ through shape, chamber and vase
Pasha, Gazi and Colonial Sultan share the same brass DNA, but they are not simply one pipe with different decoration. Stem profile, height, chamber construction, tray mounting and the selected vase all change the character. Gazi is frequently listed with a closed chamber, while other models may use open or differently constructed traditional chambers. The exact product version should always be checked with handmade series.
Popular El Nefes hookahs
These models show the range from a compact traditional pipe to an elaborate collector piece.
- 👑 Pasha - a substantial brass traditional with a gasket connection, controlled draw and numerous colored vase options.
- 🛡️ Gazi - a distinctive single-hose hookah available in closed-chamber versions with a classic Turkish brass body.
- 🏛️ Colonial Sultan - a special Sultan variation with a continuous inner tube and a charcoal tray fixed by thread.
- 🌙 Mini Moon - a more compact El Nefes at roughly 56 cm with a decorated stem for smaller spaces.
- 🦅 Turul - a classically styled traditional with one port, direct response and an intentionally handmade finish.
- ✍️ Calligraphy - an elaborate collector line with calligraphic decoration and selected Bohemian crystal vases.
Pasha, Gazi or Colonial Sultan?
Pasha is a straightforward entry into the large classic El Nefes silhouette. Gazi places more emphasis on its distinctive stem and is known in versions with an efficient closed chamber. Colonial Sultan feels more compact and stands out through a threaded tray that sits unusually firmly for a traditional hookah. Vase color changes the overall appearance dramatically, but says little about the actual draw.
The bowl and hose complete the traditional character
The male bowl adapter is designed for classic female clay bowls used with a gasket. Many modern phunnels also fit when the shape and rubber seal work together correctly. Hose washability deserves attention. Traditional leather or fabric hoses can retain flavor and are often dedicated to one flavor family. A washable silicone hose stays more neutral, but changes the classic appearance and can alter the feel of the draw.
Brass and copper should be kept clean and dry
After a session, rinse the stem and inner tube with lukewarm water, use a suitable brush and dry every part completely. Brass and copper can develop patina over time. Owners who prefer a brighter finish can occasionally polish the exterior with a suitable metal-care product. Keep it away from gold decoration, paint, gaskets and delicate vases. A little patina does not affect function and is part of the traditional look for many collectors.
Package contents and availability depend on the version
An El Nefes set may contain only the hookah and vase or add a tray, tongs, gaskets, bowl and hose, depending on the retailer and configuration. Handmade stems and Bohemian glass colors are not always continuously available. Replacement vases should not be chosen by model name alone. Neck measurement, shape and required gasket matter more than a similar color.
