The Kaloud Lotus I+ is not an HMD with one fixed coal recipe. In European setups, fully lit 26 or 27 mm coconut cubes are commonly used. A calmer setup runs with two coals inside and the lid for fine adjustment. For a faster start, many users place two cubes in the chamber and rest a third at an angle. In the Mickey Mouse setup, one coal sits in the middle and two are tilted on the left and right like ears. Once the bowl is up to temperature, the extra coal is removed, repositioned or placed fully inside after it has become smaller.
The Lotus sits cold and directly on a flat HMD-ready bowl without foil. Light contact with the bottom nubs or a small gap can both work, depending on the tobacco and pack. Closed vents retain more heat, open vents release more, and removing the lid gives the clearest drop in retained heat. Because the I+ is made from aluminum, it responds faster to corrections than a heavy stainless steel HMD. It fits many bowls in the standard HMD format and is designed around the Kaloud Samsaris range. Never preheat it on a stove or charcoal burner.
