The brand behind the Lotus

Kaloud: Lotus HMDs, Samsaris Bowls and Krysalis Hookahs

Kaloud, Lotus, Samsaris: What is what?

Kaloud is the brand behind the Lotus, but its range goes well beyond heat managers. The familiar Lotus I+, also written as Lotus 1+, sits alongside Samsaris bowls, Krysalis hookahs and accessories. The names make the range easier to navigate: Lotus holds the charcoal, Samsaris holds the tobacco, and Krysalis is the hookah itself. This is the place to explore those different parts of Kaloud, rather than just its HMD collection.

The idea behind the original Lotus

Founder Reza Bavar developed the Lotus, which reached the market in 2012. His starting point was the bowl: there had to be a more controlled way to manage heat between the charcoal and tobacco. A metal chamber with adjustable ventilation replaced perforated foil, removing the need to stretch and punch a fresh sheet for each setup. The original Lotus and the current I+ are not the same model, either. The I+ arrived in 2017 as a further development of that design.

What the name Kaloud means

Kaloud explains its name as a combination of Kalā, the Hindi word for art, and the English word cloud. Design is part of the name itself. The brand also describes hookah as a shared ritual: sitting together, talking and making time for one another. Its aim is to rethink the equipment without losing the social connection behind it.

Design that goes beyond the HMD

Japanese tea ceremonies were one source of inspiration during the development of the Krysalis. The idea was that the pieces used in a ritual should belong together, rather than simply sit next to each other. The hookah was also intended to be worth displaying when not in use. The Krysalis Eltheria Lucidity received a GOOD DESIGN Award and bronze at the International Design Awards. Kaloud's interest in design clearly extends beyond the flower-shaped Lotus.

Kaloud products and collections at a glance

From a charcoal heat manager to a complete hookah, the range falls into four main areas.

  • 🔥 Kaloud Lotus - the HMD family, including the I+, I+3, II and III, manages heat between natural charcoal and tobacco.
  • 🏺 Kaloud Samsaris - the bowl collection, with models such as the Kore, holds the tobacco beneath a compatible HMD.
  • 💨 Kaloud Krysalis - Calix, Eltheria and Monarch are Kaloud's complete hookah systems, not additional heat managers.
  • 🛠️ Kaloud accessories - Vestara charcoal tongs, Aeras trays and other additions cover the equipment around the session.

A Kaloud bowl or a bowl for a Kaloud?

Those are two different things. A Samsaris is a bowl made by Kaloud. A bowl for a Kaloud Lotus can also come from another brand. What matters is whether that particular bowl fits the specific Lotus model. Search for Samsaris when you want a Kaloud bowl; check the bowl and HMD pairing when you want to use a Lotus with equipment you already own.

You do not need to replace your whole setup

Buying a Lotus does not automatically mean buying a new hookah. The HMD sits on the bowl rather than attaching to the stem. You can change that part of your setup while keeping the rest, provided the bowl and heat manager fit together. Vestara tongs are not tied to a particular hookah brand, either. Krysalis is the range to explore when you actually want a complete Kaloud hookah.

Check the model and what is included

A Samsaris bowl and a Lotus HMD are separate products, although Kaloud also offers them in bundles. Krysalis systems come in different set configurations as well. Check whether the bowl, HMD and hose are included in the particular offer. Replacement parts also need to match the correct generation. With Kaloud, reading the full product name tells you more than recognizing the brand logo alone.
