What an HMD changes at the bowl

A hookah HMD holds lit charcoal and transfers its heat to the bowl through a metal floor. HMD stands for Heat Management Device; smokebox is another name for this type of attachment. The models featured here replace foil: pack the bowl, position the device and add fully lit coals. There is no foil to stretch or perforate. Compared with a chimney screen, the key change is the heat transfer: a hot metal floor now sits directly above the tobacco chamber.

Open access or heat control with a lid?

An open HMD keeps things simple: the coals stay visible, and you adjust their quantity and position. A model with a vented lid adds another way to regulate heat. The lid retains warmth, which can be useful as the coals shrink. Consider how you prefer to make adjustments: just with your tongs, or with the lid as well? That choice has more influence on everyday handling than the color of the device.

Aluminum or steel: look at the floor too

The metal is part of the heat system itself. Aluminum conducts heat better than stainless steel. How quickly the complete device responds also depends on its mass, floor thickness and airflow. Look at the construction as well as the material: a thin or substantial floor, a flat underside or raised contact points. When switching HMDs, adjust the warm-up phase and coal quantity to the new combination rather than simply repeating your previous routine.

Choose the HMD around your bowl

Compatibility depends on the bowl, not the hookah stem. Compare the supporting rim of your phunnel or multi-hole bowl with the HMD's base. It should sit level and securely; a pronounced retaining lip needs to accommodate the device. A phunnel's central spire also needs enough clearance to keep the air path open. If you already have a bowl that works well for you, choose an HMD to match it. That lets you keep the tobacco chamber you know.

26 mm and 27 mm cubes need room for airflow

These measurements refer to the length of each charcoal cube's edges. The aluminum ONMO, for example, is designed for two cubes up to 27 mm. Coals need to fit their intended support while leaving room for air to circulate. With a lidded model, the available height when closed matters too. Maximum capacity is not a recommendation to fill the device completely for every bowl.

Frequently asked questions about accessories

Should the shisha tobacco touch the underside of the HMD?
That depends on the blend, bowl and underside profile. A gap setup leaves space between the shisha tobacco and the HMD. With dimple or bar contact, only the raised sections touch the tobacco, unlike full contact across the floor. Match the packing height to the blend and keep the air path clear.
Can I preheat an HMD on a charcoal burner?
Not with the Kaloud Lotus I+ or the ONMO models featured here. They heat up on the bowl using fully lit coals. Preheating directly on a burner coil can damage the device. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning and first-use instructions rather than applying a generic burn-in routine.
Why do the coals turn black underneath inside my HMD?
The contact surface may not be getting enough oxygen. Ash, tightly packed cubes or blocked openings can contribute. Check that the coals were fully lit on every side before loading them, and keep the intended air passages clear. Ridges or raised supports inside the chamber create space for airflow beneath the cubes.
Why does my hookah taste harsh with an HMD?
Excess heat or more tobacco contact than intended can cause harshness. Stop smoking when it becomes harsh. Reduce the heat and use tongs to place any removed coals on a suitable non-combustible charcoal holder. The hot metal floor continues releasing heat, so adjustments are not instant. Check the packing height when preparing the next bowl.
How do I remove burnt tobacco from an HMD?
Let the HMD cool completely. Where its care instructions allow, soak stuck residue in water and loosen it with a brush suitable for the finish. Clean the air openings and supporting rim too. Coated surfaces need particular care, since forceful scraping can damage them. Rinse thoroughly and allow the device to dry.
What is the difference between an HMD and an electric HMD?
A conventional HMD distributes heat from lit charcoal. An electric HMD generates heat electrically, replacing the coals. Some systems use an existing bowl; others have their own tobacco chamber. An electric charcoal burner is different again: it only lights the coals. The Kaloud and ONMO devices featured here use charcoal.
