Heat management that fits your bowl
Kaloud Lotus: Compare HMD Models
Kaloud Lotus, HMD or smokebox?
Kaloud Lotus is Kaloud's family of heat management devices, usually shortened to HMDs. Some European shops also call them smokeboxes. The device sits on the bowl and holds natural charcoal above the tobacco in place of foil, while coal placement, the lid and vents let you adjust the heat. This page compares the Lotus I+, I+3, II and III so you can choose a model rather than just a name.
A higher number is not the whole story
The Lotus III is not simply a larger I+, and I+3 is not another way of writing III. The I+ uses the familiar aluminum design. The I+3 changes the base material and provides more charcoal space. The II and III also differ in lid operation and underside shape. Instead of choosing by generation alone, start with what you would actually change about your current setup.
Aluminum, stainless steel or both?
The I+ has an aluminum body. The I+3 combines a stainless steel base with an aluminum wall and lid. The Lotus II and III come in different material versions, so compare the exact edition rather than the model number alone. Weight and shape also affect warm-up and heat adjustments. A heavier HMD is not automatically an advantage when your priority is reducing heat quickly.
Which bowl fits a Kaloud Lotus?
The important fit is at the bowl, not the hookah stem. The I+ measures around 7.5 cm across, excluding its handle, but matching that diameter is not enough. A raised lip must not pinch the HMD, and a curved rim must not leave it rocking. Even with Samsaris bowls, the version matters. Kaloud offers a Vitria II specifically for the Lotus I+. Check the exact pairing when changing models, not just the bowl's family name.
Nub contact does not transfer between models
On the I+, the underside nubs can be part of how you pack the bowl. The Lotus III has a center section that sits higher than its outer supporting rim. The same tobacco height therefore does not create the same contact. Do not copy an I+ pack onto the III without checking the gap: otherwise, you are comparing two different tobacco clearances as well as two HMDs.
Popular Kaloud Lotus models
Four models with differences that go beyond their appearance.
- 🔥 Kaloud Lotus I+ - also known as Lotus 1+ or 1 Plus, with an aluminum body, underside nubs and a removable lid with adjustable vents.
- ⚙️ Kaloud Lotus I+3 - combines a stainless steel base with an aluminum wall and lid, plus a larger coal chamber than the I+.
- 🌺 Kaloud Lotus II - its domed lid is turned and lifted with a separate adjustment key rather than a permanently attached lid handle.
- 🔄 Kaloud Lotus III - pairs built-in rotating handles with a recessed center section underneath and comes in aluminum and stainless steel versions.
Two coals, three coals or Mickey Mouse?
Using 26 or 27 mm cubes? I+ setups include two coals inside with the lid, two inside plus one tilted, or the Mickey Mouse arrangement. In that last setup, one cube sits in the middle and two are tilted at the sides. This is not a fixed three-coal recipe for the entire session. Adjust the number and position once the bowl is hot, and make sure tilted coals sit securely. A larger chamber, such as the I+3's, does not have to be filled either.
Keep the lid as an extra heat option
A Lotus retains more heat with its lid on, which can help as the coals shrink. If the tobacco starts tasting harsh, closing it further is not the answer: removing the lid or taking away a coal makes a more direct adjustment. Avoid changing the coal load, pack and lid position all at once, or you will struggle to tell what helped. Start with the HMD cold on the bowl, never preheated on a charcoal burner.
Niris is a finish, not another Lotus model
Names such as Niris for black and Auris for gold describe the finish. A Lotus I+ Niris is still an I+, not an I+3 or III. Choose the model and material first, then the color. That way, you will not accidentally compare an aluminum edition with a stainless steel one just because both look black.
